Auguri per 4 di Luglio

Happy 4th of July. Nobody seems to be celebrating here in Cinqueterre, Italy...except for the celebration of delicious fruits and cappucinos and all the beautious views and such. But the Italians still seem generally glad that America won the War of Independence.

Firenze was our previous stop before arriving here. We very much enjoyed the sites and the city but did not care for the woman, whom I'll call Signoria Italia NO Bene, who was going to put us up in her hotel, a boutique clad with her own painting and sculpture collection. After numerous castigations about our arrival time and the things we didn't and did do (e.g. me sitting on the bed and thereby messing it up) we said "see ya, SINB" and got a different place.

I fast-forward to our arrival in Corniglia two nights ago, where we encountered Signoria Italia Super Bene. We get off the train in this train station in this tiny town. It's late and dark and quiet and few are in the station. We approach a family and ask them how to get to Hotel Cicio. SISB jumps up (she overheard from 20 yards away) and comes over and tells us she knows the owner. After three or four seconds she's on her cell, calling the owner: translation from Italian: Jacinto, you's a betta getta yaself down to da station to picka uppa these nice-a people, eh?! WHASSAMATTAYOU.

Cinqueterre (and especially the treks between the towns) has been wonderful and we even made two American friends, John and Gecko from Venice Beach, CA.

Oh, and the ATM in Corniglia ate Sole's ATM/debit card last night--her only U.S. card--so that was last night's and this morning's adventure.

Happy Fourth of July,
Paul
